A major part of The Royal British Legion's welfare work is to provide short and long-term care for ex-Service people and their dependants in our Poppy Homes around the country. The Legion has seven Poppy Homes, which provide residential and nursing care. They vary in size from 47 bedrooms to 72 bedrooms. Every Home is a safe, well-equipped environment, which is intended to be a real home, somewhere that our residents can feel comfortable, for however long they stay. Poppy Homes are exclusive to ex-Service people and their dependants, so there's a unique camaraderie because each resident has a Service connection.
The seven Poppy Homes and their locations are as follows:
Crosfield House (Mid-Wales)
Dunkirk Memorial House (South-West)
Galanos House (Midlands)
Halsey House (East Anglia)
Lister House (North)
Mais House (South-East)
Maurice House (South-East)
Galanos House in the heart of the Midlands is the nearest Poppy Home to Derbyshire. It is supported by Derbyshire and Branches from the County.
A Matron/Manager, who is both a Registered Nurse as well as an experienced manager, runs each Home, assisted by a 24-hour nursing staff and a team of care assistants. Each resident is cared for as an individual he or she is, with a care plan specific to his or her needs, and has a named nurse and/or key worker. Our experienced, highly trained staff cares for residents with the respect and dignity you would expect from the Legion.
As well as care, every Home has a range of activities for residents to take part in, which are organised by an Activity Co-ordinator. There are plenty of opportunities to live life to the full, both by discovering new interests, as well as maintaining old ones. There is also a licensed bar in each home where many residents gather together socially.
Along with residential care and nursing, some Homes offer day care or dementia care and one Home can accommodate young, physically disabled individuals, tailoring their care very specifically to their needs. Each Home is able to provide information about the specific services offered in its 'Statement of Purpose'. This document may be obtained on request. A copy of the Residents Handbook, which includes a summary of the Statement of Purpose, is available in each resident's room.
