The Derby Concert Band in association with Derbyshire Royal British
Legion held a concert to mark ninety years of the British Legion.
The concert was titled '90th Anniversary Concert of Remembrance' and
was held in Derby Cathedral on Saturday 12th November 2011.
The concert featured The Derby Concert Band and The Chesterfield
Philharmonic Choir.
The first half of the concert comprised of a performance of Karl Jenkins
- 'The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace'. The Band and Choir, conducted by
Steven Roberts - Musical Director of the Chesterfield Philharmonic
Choir, presented the seven movements of the Mass; The Armed Man, Kyrie,
Sanctus, Agnus Dei, Benedictus and Better is Peace. The Mass was
commissioned by the Royal Armouries Museum and was dedicated to the
victims of Kosovo.
The second half was of the more traditional Remembrance concert
beginning with the parade of Standards to T Bidgood's - British Legion
March. The County Standard was carried by the County Standard
Bearer - Malcolm Jarvis. The Derbyshire County President of
The Royal British Legion - Bill Else then recited the Act of Exhortation
before the Band and Choir, now conducted by Simon Willis - Musical
Director of the Derby Concert Band took over the remaining part of the
Concert. This included the singalong Keep Smiling Through with
audience participation.
