Recruitment

The effectiveness of the Legion as an organisation depends on its membership. But the membership can be maintained only if new members are recruited.  Recruiting is not always as difficult as it seems. The County Recruiting Team attend many local events with a marquee and have displays to attract attention. These displays highlight the benefits of membership of The Royal British Legion and also the work of the Legion through a wide range of free publicity material such as posters and leaflets. Visitors are asked if they would like to join the Legion and sometimes if they do why they hadn't joined before.

If you want members of the County Recruiting Team to attend your event with the marquee please contact the Principal County Recruiting Officer (PCRO), see below for details.  He will tell you whether any of the Team and the marquee is available. The Team are all busy people so please give as much notice as possible.  (See County Marquee for clarification of use.)

County Marquee

There seems to be a little confusion over the role of the County Marquee.  It's main purpose is to make people aware of the Royal British Legion.  To this end it is used to encourage new members to join, become part of the poppy team, become a welfare worker, and to enable people to understand how we can help them and the service and ex-service community and their dependents.  It is the County arm of Legion in The Community.

The bucket collection is for the marquee fund to help defray costs.  It is not a branch fund raising vehicle, if money is raised for the branch that is a bonus.  A member of the County Recruiting Team will always accompany the marquee, but branches are expected to provide members to man it.

All requests for a marquee must be made directly to the Principal County Recruiting Officer (PCRO), see below for details, to avoid any possible double booking.

Courses

The County needs more Recruiting Advisors, this helps the Branches as well as the County, please contact the PCRO if you can help.  Recruiters are given help with developing their recruiting skills.  Branch members who are actively involved in recruiting should attend a one day Recruiting Advisers Course. These are run at weekends and attendees are provided with refreshments and are reimbursed for their travel.  Membership/LIC seminars are also run periodically within the County. Dates of courses and seminars are available from the PCRO.

 Retention

Recruiting is important but so is Retention. Statistics show that we in the Legion are quite good at recruiting. But then we don't keep our members and worse, we often lose more than we recruit so numbers are steadily declining both nationally as well as across the County. Despite the negative feeling among some Branches, DDSP is a proven way to keep members and it can only save busy secretaries a lot of work chasing subscriptions. Once recruited, a good welcome often encourages a new member to stay.
