Railway War Memorial Rededication

The Midland Railway War Memorial which had some of its bronze plaques stolen in August 2010 has been restored by Network Rail and the Railway Heritage Trust at a cost of £18,000. The plaques carry the names of the 2,833 men of the Midland Railway who gave their lives in the First World War.  They were rededicated at a service conducted by the Rev James Lindsay, on Friday 17th December 2010.  The Reverend Lindsay is a chaplain with the National Rail Chaplaincy Service.  The memorial, which was originally dedicated on  15th December 1921 was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.


The service was well attended by the Derby & District ex-Services Association and by former and present-day railway personnel.  The Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire Willie Tucker read some of the names during the ceremony as a roll of honour.  The Mayor of Derby, Councillor Amar Nath, read the poem In Flanders Fields, by John McCrae. Bernard Page, chairman of Derbyshire Royal British Legion recited the Exhortation and ex-Royal Marine Bugle Major, Adrian Harper played the Last Post and Reveille.
