The Memories of Stanley Village Trust (MOSVT) held a Memorial
Service at the W5795 Wellington Bomber Memorial Plinth in the church
yard of Saint Andrew's, Station Road, Stanley, Derbyshire, DE7 6F on
Saturday 9th July 2011. There was also a flypast of a Hurricane
from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
The service and flypast were to mark the anniversary of the
loss of Wellington Bomber No. W5795 which crashed in Stanley on Sunday July 12th 1942. The plane plummeted
to the ground during an altitude test flight resulting in the deaths of crew: Squadron Leader Cyril Colmore,
Pilot Officer Kenneth Radford, Flight Sergeant Ronald Gillott, Flight Sergeant Arthur Smith and test observer
Clifford Abbott.
Guest of Honour will be War Widow Mrs Freda Burton, who is 97 years old, she is the widow of the Rear Gunner
of the Bomber. She will be travelling from Cumbria to pay homage at Stanley. Other guests will
include family members of the crew from Yorkshire, the Mayor of Erewash and other dignitaries. Five doves
from the National Memorial Arboretum Pax Liberation Doves of Peace will be released in memory of the crew.
The Memorial Service and Flypast have been timed to precede the opening of the West Hallam Well Dressing.
